Mold Remediation in Metairie, LA

Metairie sits right next to New Orleans, across the 17th Street Canal, and most of its homes went up in the 1960s and 1970s. NOLA Mold Remediation is a free quote service, not a mold company: describe the mold once and independent local inspection and remediation companies can reply with quotes.

Mold inspection, testing or removal: where to start in Metairie

Most Metairie mold calls start with either a stain you can see or a smell you can't place.

If you can see it, you can usually skip the test. EPA says, "In most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary." Go straight to removal quotes and ask each company to find and explain the water source.

If you can only smell it, a mold inspection makes sense. An inspector uses moisture readings and, if needed, air or surface samples to find hidden growth. Fixr puts mold inspection and testing at about $450 to $800 nationally (Jan 2025). Louisiana has a two-company rule here, covered below.

What Metairie housing looks like

Metairie is a census-designated place in Jefferson Parish, not a city, so the Census Bureau publishes no yearly population estimate for it. These figures come from the American Community Survey 2020–2024.

MeasureMetairie
Residents139,729
Median year built1972
Homes built in the 1960s / 1970s24.9% / 24.2%

Early Metairie grew along Metairie Ridge, a natural levee, and the 1920s tracts near New Orleans are now called Old Metairie. The big building wave came later. Many homes from the 1960s and 1970s are slab ranch houses, though no source counts Metairie homes by foundation type. On a slab, water that gets inside wets drywall, baseboards and the wall cavity right at floor level.

Rain, not just hurricanes

Metairie is bordered by New Orleans to the east, Kenner to the west and Lake Pontchartrain to the north, and it depends on pumps to move rainwater. Heavy rain has flooded streets and homes here more than once:

  • May 1995: a storm that accounts describe as dropping upwards of 20 inches of rain in about twelve hours flooded Metairie, Kenner, Harahan and River Ridge. FEMA declared a major disaster for Jefferson Parish on May 10, 1995.
  • August 2021: Hurricane Ida knocked out all power in Jefferson Parish, according to the National Hurricane Center. Without AC, houses lost their main defense against summer humidity.
  • September 11, 2024: Hurricane Francine dropped 9.48 inches of rain at a gauge 2.2 miles west-southwest of Metairie, one of the highest totals in the National Weather Service report, much of it within a few hours.

Summer dew points at the airport average about 72 to 74°F from June through August (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). Cold AC ducts and water lines can sweat in that air.

Louisiana license check

Louisiana requires a Mold Remediation license from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) for mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up (La. R.S. 37:2150.1). Before you sign, look up the company's license on the LSLBC website. In Louisiana, a mold remediation contractor may not also do the mold assessment on the same property, or own the company that does (R.S. 37:2158).

What Metairie mold removal tends to cost

Published national estimates, not quotes: a typical mold remediation job runs $1,200 to $3,750 (This Old House, Mar 2026), or $10 to $25 per square foot. HVAC and duct work runs $3,000 to $10,000 (Fixr, Aug 2025). See the New Orleans mold remediation cost guide for more.

Metairie mold questions

Do I need mold testing in Metairie before I get removal quotes?

Usually not, if you can already see the mold. EPA says that in most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. Testing helps with hidden mold, disputes, or a clearance check after the work. If you want one, hire a separate company from the one doing the removal.

Can one Metairie company do both the mold inspection and the removal?

Not on the same property. In Louisiana, a mold remediation contractor may not also do the mold assessment on the same property, or own the company that does (R.S. 37:2158). Many people hire an independent inspector first, then get removal quotes. You can ask for both kinds of company through the free quote form.

My Metairie street flooded during Francine but the water barely came inside. Should I worry?

Check before you decide. Even an inch of water can wick up drywall and soak baseboards, carpet pad and the bottom plate of the wall. EPA's advice is to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours. If walls stayed damp longer than that, or you now notice a musty smell low on the walls, have it looked at.
