What drives the cost of a mold job

  • Size of the affected area. The biggest factor. What you see on the surface is often smaller than what turns up behind drywall, cabinets or baseboards once the wall is opened.
  • Where it is in the house. An open bathroom wall is quicker than a low attic in August or a tight crawl space under a raised shotgun house, where workers lie on damp ground.
  • Porous materials. Framing, concrete and other hard surfaces can usually be cleaned. Moldy drywall, insulation, carpet and pad usually have to be cut out, bagged and hauled away.
  • Containment. Larger jobs need plastic walls, a sealed doorway and HEPA air scrubbers so spores don't drift into the rest of the home. More rooms means more setup.
  • HVAC and ducts. Mold in an air handler or ductwork adds $3,000 to $10,000 in Fixr's range, and the HVAC repair itself is a separate trade.
  • Flood scope. After street flooding or a storm surge, the job often covers every room at floor level, with flood cuts a few feet up the walls. Fixr puts combined water damage and mold work at $2,700 to $10,000.
  • Testing. An inspection before the work and a clearance test after it are optional extras, and in Louisiana they come from a different company than the remediator.
  • Rebuild is separate. New drywall, paint, flooring and trim are usually a second contract. Mold cleanup itself usually isn't permitted work, but in New Orleans drywall replacement generally needs a permit, as do electrical, plumbing, roofing and historic-district exterior work. Your rebuild contractor should pull it. Other parishes have their own rules.

The Louisiana license line: about $7,500

Louisiana requires a Mold Remediation license from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) for mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up (La. R.S. 37:2150.1). Before you sign, look up the company's license on the LSLBC website. The project value counts the whole job, labor and materials, no matter who pays, and splitting one job into smaller contracts to stay under the line is disregarded (R.S. 37:2158). A whole-house job after a flood will usually cross it.

  • A written contract with the company's license number, the price and its insurance certificates (R.S. 37:2159)
  • A written report of the work when it is done (R.S. 37:2158)
  • Proof of at least $100,000 in liability insurance and workers' comp (R.S. 37:2156.1)

In Louisiana, a mold remediation contractor may not also do the mold assessment on the same property, or own the company that does (R.S. 37:2158).

A planning figure from published national ranges, not a quote. It leaves out rebuild, roof, plumbing and electrical repairs and contents. In Louisiana, jobs of about $7,500 and up require an LSLBC-licensed mold remediation contractor. Quotes come from the independent companies, not from this site.

Will insurance pay for it?

Flood damage goes to your flood (NFIP) policy, and wind, roof and plumbing damage usually goes to your homeowners policy. Mold coverage depends on the cause and your policy's mold limits. FEMA says NFIP policyholders must take steps to limit mold after a flood and should talk to their adjuster before signing a cleaning or remediation contract.

Photograph and video everything before tear-out, keep samples if your adjuster asks, and dry out within 24 to 48 hours where you can. No one, including this site or the companies that reply, can promise what your policy will pay. Read more on mold after flooding and storms.

Get quotes you can compare

Ask each company for an itemized written scope: the rooms, containment, what will be removed, drying, any clearance test and whether rebuild is included. Then compare like with like. If the mold is in a bathroom, an attic or a crawl space, the bathroom, attic and crawl space pages explain what those jobs usually involve, and mold removal covers the full remediation process.

Mold cost questions

How much does mold remediation cost per square foot?

Published national guides put it at $10 to $25 per square foot of affected area (This Old House, Mar 2026) or $10 to $30 (Fixr, Aug 2025). So 100 square feet of moldy drywall often prices near $1,000 to $2,500 before testing, HVAC work or rebuild. New Orleans-area quotes vary with access, materials and how far the water spread.

How much does a mold inspection cost in New Orleans?

Fixr's January 2025 national figures put mold inspection with testing at $450 to $800, with an average near $500, and a visual inspection alone at $300 to $600. An air test runs about $500 to $700 and a tape or swab surface test about $150 to $200. HomeAdvisor's New Orleans page, as shown in search results, lists about $377 on average for testing.

Why do mold quotes vary so much?

Companies may be quoting different scopes. One may include containment, removal, drying and a clearance test; another may leave out testing or rebuild. Hidden mold, a tight crawl space or hot attic, ductwork and a whole flooded floor all change the price. Ask for an itemized written scope so you can compare line by line.

Does the license rule change the price?

It changes the paperwork. For mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up, Louisiana requires an LSLBC-licensed mold remediation contractor, a written contract with the license number, price and insurance certificates, and a written report. Splitting one job into smaller contracts to stay under the line is disregarded under R.S. 37:2158.

Does homeowners insurance pay for mold remediation in Louisiana?

Sometimes. Coverage depends on the cause and your policy's mold limits. Flood damage goes to your flood (NFIP) policy, and wind, roof and plumbing damage usually goes to your homeowners policy. Photograph everything first and talk to your insurer or adjuster before signing a remediation contract. No one can promise coverage in advance.
