Mold Remediation Cost in New Orleans: How to Read a Quote in 2026
Mold quotes in New Orleans can look wildly different for what seems like the same problem. One company says a few hundred dollars, another says several thousand. Most of that gap comes from scope: how much material comes out, how the work area is contained, whether HVAC or a crawl space is involved, and what is left for a separate rebuild. This guide uses published price ranges and Louisiana rules to help you compare quotes side by side.
For the short version with a calculator, see the mold remediation cost page.
How much does mold remediation cost?
There is no official New Orleans price list. The most useful benchmarks are published national estimates from cost guides. Treat them as a starting point, not a quote.

Two national guides land in different places for a typical job: about $1,200–$3,750 (This Old House, Mar 2026) and $1,500–$9,000 (Fixr, Aug 2025). The per-square-foot ranges are close: $10–$25 and $10–$30. A small bathroom ceiling and a flooded first floor are very different jobs, and the table shows it.
What changes the price of a mold job?
- Size of the affected area. The biggest factor. Per-square-foot pricing means doubling the area roughly doubles the work.
- Where the mold is. Attics, crawl spaces under raised homes and wall cavities take longer to reach than an open wall.
- Porous materials. Moldy drywall, insulation, carpet and ceiling tiles usually come out, which adds labor and disposal.
- Containment. Plastic sheeting, sealed doorways and HEPA air filtration keep spores out of the rest of the house. Larger jobs need more of it.
- HVAC involvement. Mold in an air handler or ducts is priced separately and can be the most expensive line ($3,000–$10,000, Fixr, Aug 2025).
- Flood scope. After flooding, crews often flood-cut drywall above the water line and dry the structure. Water damage plus mold runs $2,700–$10,000 (Fixr, Aug 2025).
- Testing. An optional inspection before work or a clearance test after adds cost. Testing should come from a separate company (see below).
Rebuild is usually separate. Most remediation quotes end when the mold is removed and the area is clean and dry. New drywall, paint, flooring and trim are a separate rebuild. Mold cleanup itself usually isn't permitted work, but in New Orleans drywall replacement generally needs a permit, as do electrical, plumbing, roofing and historic-district exterior work. Your rebuild contractor should pull it. Other parishes have their own rules.
Why the $7,500 mark matters in Louisiana
Louisiana requires a Mold Remediation license from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) for mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up (La. R.S. 37:2150.1). The project value counts labor, materials and other direct and indirect costs, and the law treats a job split into smaller contracts to stay under the line as one contract (R.S. 37:2158). Before you sign, look up the company's license on the LSLBC website. Don't assume every company that replies is licensed; check.
Below that line, a license is not required for mold remediation, but the same questions about insurance, a written scope and a written report still protect you.
What should a mold remediation quote include?
A quote you can compare has the same parts as a good contract. For licensed jobs, Louisiana law spells several of these out.
- The company's name, address and LSLBC license number (R.S. 37:2159).
- A description of the work: rooms, square footage, materials to remove, containment and air filtration.
- The total price, or a clear method for time-and-materials work.
- Current certificates of liability insurance (at least $100,000) and workers' comp (R.S. 37:2156.1, 2159).
- What is not included: rebuild, HVAC, testing, contents cleaning.
- A written report when the work is done (R.S. 37:2158).
- A payment schedule tied to progress, not a large upfront payment.
Do I need to pay for mold testing too?
Not always. EPA says, "In most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary." Testing is worth it for hidden mold, a dispute with a landlord or seller, or a clearance check after work. Fixr (Jan 2025) lists mold inspection or testing at $450–$800 (avg ≈ $500), with air tests $500–$700 and surface tests $150–$200.
In Louisiana, a mold remediation contractor may not also do the mold assessment on the same property, or own the company that does (R.S. 37:2158). If one company offers to test, then remove, then clear its own work, ask why. Our mold inspection and testing page explains the options.
Does insurance pay for mold remediation?
Sometimes, depending on the cause. Flood damage goes to your flood (NFIP) policy, and wind, roof and plumbing damage usually goes to your homeowners policy. Mold coverage depends on the cause and your policy's mold limits. FEMA says NFIP policyholders must take steps to limit mold after a flood and should talk to their adjuster before signing a cleaning or remediation contract. Photograph and video everything before tear-out, and keep copies of every quote.
How to compare quotes fairly
Give every company the same facts
Where the mold is, roughly how big, what caused it, and whether you own or rent.
Line up the scope
Compare square footage, materials removed, containment and drying, not just the total.
Check what's excluded
A low quote that skips HVAC or leaves the leak unfixed may cost more later.
Verify before you sign
Look up the LSLBC license, ask for insurance certificates and read the payment terms.

Frequently asked questions
How much does mold remediation cost in New Orleans?
There is no official local price list. Published national estimates put a typical job at about $1,200 to $3,750 (This Old House, Mar 2026) or $1,500 to $9,000 (Fixr, Aug 2025), and about $10 to $30 per square foot. New Orleans-area quotes vary with size, location in the house, materials removed and whether HVAC or flooding is involved.
Why are mold remediation quotes so different?
Mostly because of scope. Quotes differ in how much material is removed, how much containment and air filtration is used, whether ducts or a crawl space are included, and whether rebuild or testing is part of the price. Compare the written scope line by line, not just the total.
Does a mold company need a license in Louisiana?
For mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up, Louisiana requires a Mold Remediation license from the LSLBC (La. R.S. 37:2150.1). Look up the company's license on the LSLBC website before you sign, and make sure the license number is on the written contract.
Is mold testing included in a remediation quote?
It shouldn't be done by the same company. In Louisiana, a mold remediation contractor may not also do the mold assessment on the same property, or own the company that does (R.S. 37:2158). Testing is optional in most cases; EPA says sampling is usually unnecessary when mold is visible.
